Planned before the confirmation pass is read: GitHub organizations as candidates beyond Qt and Chromium¶
AJ asked for six or more organizations, so that RQ2 has a federation of several clients and RQ1 more than two cells. The permitted Gerrit hosts give OpenStack and Wikimedia; LineageOS yields 458 examples from about 29,800 merged changes (its reviewers rarely comment inline). GitHub's Acceptable Use Policies allow research use of public information when the resulting publications are open access; identities are pseudonymised at ingestion as on Gerrit.
Corrected on 2026-10-08. The clause reads "public, non-personal information", and review threads count as personal data. See "The hosts' terms re-read" below.
A first pass (50 PRs an organization, unweighted) ranked twelve organizations; six went forward: OpenJDK, LLVM, Apache, HashiCorp, Grafana and .NET. It counted OpenJDK at zero until its PRs were read as integrated rather than merged, since its bot closes them.
The confirmation pass (scripts/github_sizing.py, draws in github-sizing-draws-<org>.jsonl,
summary by scripts/github_sizing_report.py): per month of the training window, 20 draws of a
uniformly random day, then a uniformly random merged (OpenJDK: integrated) PR from that day; the
Hansen-Hurwitz month total, summed over months; a stratified bootstrap interval, read as a lower
bound on uncertainty since review activity is heavy-tailed. A PR's count is its reviewer-started
inline threads (not the author, not a bot or AI reviewer, anchored to a line, before the PR's last
commit), excluding threads that open with a suggestion block (reviewer-written code, which v3
removes on Gerrit too). PRs authored by a bot or AI agent count zero and their share is reported.
Projected training examples apply the thread-to-example conversion measured on the built
OpenStack and Wikimedia corpora (the report reads it from them).
Rule, fixed now. An organization is a candidate for an H1 cell when the low end of its projected examples reaches two halves at N = 1,850 (3,700), and for RQ2 when it reaches one adapter (1,850); "borderline" when only the high end does. Candidates are appended to the registered ordered list behind Qt and Chromium; none is admitted before its corpus is built and meets the split criteria, as for every organization. LLVM is one monorepo, so its projects for the split need a definition (its top-level directories) registered before its split is read. A PR's comments and commits are read from their first page (100 items), so a PR with more review comments than that is undercounted, which errs toward too few. The pass was started before this entry was written (13:57); no organization's result had been read.
