OpenStack on corpus v3: seed effect 0.0077, detectable +0.0246 and +0.0210, and a dev pilot that passes on a different partition¶
Five single-seed placebo jobs at the half size (207303 to 207307, pinned at 8334d79) on
corpus-v3/openstack, copied to TIGRIS with all 109 files' sha256 matched. The five roots are
byte-identical under the same digest command as v2: 0ee3f74ab4a1b6e9. Every outcome-neutral
check passed in every job. The halves equalize at 2,004 and are scored on 98 and 109 development
changes (v2: 116 and 113).
Seed effect (seed-effect-placebo-openstack-v3.json): 0.0077 at five seeds, one-sided 95%
upper bound 0.0376 on 4 degrees of freedom (v2: 0.0116, 0.0426). The point estimate falls below the
0.01 above which five seeds were registered, so the rule as worded gives three. Five are kept,
a deviation from the rule's wording: its one application, in RQ1's setting, took three only with
both the estimate (0.000) and its upper bound (0.0098) at or below 0.01, and here the bound is
0.0376. The rule exists to keep the crossed interval nominal, three seeds hold nominal only up to
0.01, and five hold at every seed effect measured, so the deviation is the conservative one.
Entered on Registered decisions.
Sensitivity at the half size on v3 (decomposition-sensitivity-v3.json, built as v2's was: seed 1
as the variance model, the five-seed point estimate). The planned test total is re-projected rather
than carried over: v3 keeps 207 of v2's 229 development changes, so 1,809 x 207/229 = 1,635, split
774 and 861 in v3's development proportions. The test window's own share of suggested edits is
likely higher still, so this projection errs large.
| level | detectable effect at power 0.928 | null reads bounded | null false positive |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.975 | +0.0246 | 0.910 | 0.02 |
| 0.95 | +0.0210 | 0.890 | 0.05 |
Smaller than v2's +0.0266 and +0.0250 despite fewer changes, because the seed effect fell: the
per-change sampling error of H1 at each version's planned size is the same, 0.0051 (half a's
per-change variance fell, half b's rose). The drop is two and three of the finest bisection steps
(0.0023), near the simulation's resolution. As the seed-count precedent was bracketed, the same
simulation at the seed effect's upper bound, 0.0376, gives the pessimistic end
(decomposition-sensitivity-v3-b0.0376.json). The null false-positive rate at 0.95 is 5 of 100 trials against a
nominal one-sided 0.025, which is about an 11% event at nominal; v2's was 1 of 100. Recorded, not
acted on at 100 trials.
The dev pilot passes (decomposition-pilot-openstack-v3.json): H1 +0.0284 [+0.0028, +0.0532]
at 95%, against v2's +0.0134 [-0.0091, +0.0350]. Three things qualify it, in order of weight.
- It is a different partition. The registered split is a function of the corpus and sensitive to small changes in it: removing a few percent of examples reorders the project counts it balances, and v3 also loses 8 of v2's 246 training-window projects entirely: 117 of the 238 projects both versions share changed halves. v2 and v3 read H1 on two different partitions of OpenStack, so the move measures partition-to-partition variation as much as anything the rule did. The seed effect does not capture that variation; it is measured next.
- It is not the removed examples diluting the contrast. v2's own runs scored only on the examples v3 keeps (1,509 of 1,659 scored rows a run) read +0.0090 [-0.0151, +0.0322], slightly below v2's full reading. On those runs the 50 removed development examples carried a contrast of about +0.06 pooled over seeds (24 and 26 a half, no interval at that size), not zero, so the expectation stated in the v3 entry above did not hold on v2's runs. The rescoring holds v2's adapters fixed, so it rules out dilution at scoring time, not the change to what they trained on.
- The rule was adopted after v2's pilot was read, though for a reason unrelated to it (found in Wikimedia's bot audit) and fixed before any v3 contrast existed. The development window is a censored pilot either way.
